Romantic exploits of a thief

S. R. ASHOK KUMAR.

The star of ``Kalvanin Kadhali" is S. J. Surya, who this time around, sticks to acting.

DELIGHTFUL COMPANY: From ``Kalvanin Kadhali," a completely commercial venture.

It was S. J. Surya in irrepressible form that one came across at AVM Studios where shooting for Dream Maker's UK5 "Kalvanin Kadhali" was on in full swing. Surrounded by a bevy of young girls, clad in glamorous costumes, Surya, without the burden of acting, appeared totally at ease, chatting and cracking jokes. Obviously the group was getting ready for a dance. Thamizhvanan makes his debut as director, with N. K. Ekambaram handling the camera. Dance master Raju Sundaram was seen giving necessary instruction to his assistants about the dance movements.

The group takes the floor and with Raju Sundaram giving instructions go through the movements. They stop to catch their breath and Surya uses the break to come over for a tête-à-tête. ``Well, I'm relaxed since I'm only acting and not directing. And I'm quite happy with the way this song is shaping up. It is Thamizhvanan's script and he has done his homework. It'll be a different Surya you'll be seeing," says Surya, whose ''New" and ``Anbe Aaruyire" made waves.

How does Thamizhvanan feel having a colourful personality in the team? ``There is no tension. I know I'm directing Surya, actor-director, an excellent script-writer, who has to his credit such hits as `Vaali' and `Kushi.' But he doesn't impose himself on us. He is willing to help with tips but doesn't interfere.

Now what about the story? As the title suggests it is about a thief and his romantic exploits. His ladylove is Nayantara. Vivek, Sada, Arya, Pyramid Natarajan, Manikkavinayakam and S. N. Lakshmi play important roles. The film has the music score of Yuvan Shanker Raja.

According to the director they will be shooting songs in a place hitherto not visited by a film crew. "It is a glamour film that can be watched by the entire family," sums up Thamizhvanan.
