Commemorating the vardhanti of Muttuswamy Dikshitar , Thyagaraja Aradhana Trust in association with Visakha Music and Dance Academy organised a violin solo by Dwaram Durga Prasada Rao last Friday.Ably supported on violin by his younger brother, Satyanarayana Rao and exquisitely on mridangam by Vankayala Venkata Ramana Murthy, he enthralled the audience playing some select compositions of the vaggeyakara.
Prasada Rao, who was initiated into Carnatic music on violin at the age of four by his grand father Venkata Krishnayya under the tutelage of his father Narasinga Rao Naidu, won first prize in Akashvani music competitions at the age of 15 in 1957. He creditably rendered a full-fledged recital on violin at the age of 20. A top ranking artiste of Akashvani, he rendered solo performances for the south zone and national hook-up programmes of All India Radio and Doordarshan besides participating in Sangeeta Sammelanams. He not only by choice provided accompaniment to stalwarts of high esteem like Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. Sripada Pinakapani, Balamurali, flautist N. Ramani, Nedunuri, late Voleti and so on, he worked as a lecturer (violin) in M.R. Government Music College, Vizianagaram for 24 years and as its principal for 18 years before his retirement in 2000.
Besides solo programmes in prestigious sangeeta sabhas all over the south, he gave many a lecture demonstration for SPIC-MACAY all over the United Kingdom and Ireland under the aegis of ICCR.
The repertoire for his recital in Kalaabharathi comprised Ramachandram Bhavayami (Vasantha), Maathangi Marakataangi (Doutha Panchamam - Sampoorna raaganga vivadi ragam with the occurrence of the Shatsruthi Rishabham in the Uttaraangam) and Sadaachaleswara (Bhoopalam) besides Vaatapiganapathim (Hamsadvani) with which he started and concluded the recital with a couple of Notuswarams composed in the western style by Dikshitar. Ramana Murthy proved to be his peer in executing the jathis and thani.
