In memory of a thespian

The playlet contest organised at Visakhapatnam recently featured some good plays.

Actor, director and producer of purposeful plays, late B.S. Chalam of Gavara Kancharapalem in Visakhapatnam rendered yeoman service to the theatre organising drama festivals regularly in the locality.

Initiated by his son Chinni, a veritable artiste himself, theatre buffs in the area formed a dramatic association called `Chalam Smaraka Kalaa Parishad' and organised a playlet competition.

Inaugurated by Visakha-II MLA S. Ranga Raju, it was held with the active support lent by the members of the Gavara Kancharapalem Abhyudaya Sangham, Sri Balasaraswathi Fine Arts and Visakha Gouri Seva Kendram in the premises of Gouri Kala Kendram in the area. Noted dramatist R. Kumara Raja, Dr. B.V. Satyanarayana and artiste Naresh were felicitated at the inaugural function.

The staging of the Nandi Award winning play Bahu Roopi scripted by Sistla Chandra Sekhar and directed by K.V.S. Prasad for Sri Sadguru Kala Nilayam, Guntur, marked the grand finale of the fete. It was chosen for the best production award and B. Jaya Sankar who lived the main role (Bhagavathar Rama Sarma) the best actor prize. Giving equal importance to folk music, dance and drama, the playwright sought to highlight the need to protect the age old traditions for posterity with a telling effect. Besides Sankar, Ch. Satyanarayana, N. Hanumantha Rao, Y.G.G. Venkateswara Rao and L. Aparna acted well.

Manavatvaniki Maro Konam of K. Viswanath directed by M. Jagadish for Bhagyasri Fine Arts; Kalaavani's Sadgathi of `Ubhaya Godavari' scripted by Snigdha and directed by Prasada Murthy; Vizianagaram-based Appala Swamy Smaraka Trust's Enimido Adugu and Manasu Telusuko, scripted and directed by V. Sangameswara Rao for VSP Kakaarula Sangham were some plays that stood out.
