Sumanth's fists of fury

M.L. NARASIMHAM

Full up with action scenes and romance, V. Samudra's `Mahanandi' is the one to watch out for this season.

SICKLES `N' SWORDS Sumanth in a high-powered action role.

The atmosphere is charged with shouts and screams as the action scene is being filmed by stunt director `Horseman' Babu even as the camera mounted on a crane vividly captures lead star Srihari's myriad emotions as he fights single-handedly with scores of stunt artistes posing as the villain's gang. Every one right from the light men holding the reflectors to the director are so involved in the scene that the lead star's emotion reflected on their expressive faces. The stunt director is too happy that the `fight' is taking shape as he has designed.

Suddenly for a moment panic gripped the place as mishap occurr during the shoot. Srihari sustains knee injury . V. Samudra, the director of the film, wants his star actor to be rushed for immediate medical attention.

An adamant Srihari says he will complete the shot first. No amount of cajoling works with the actor. The shoot commenced again as Srihari without showing any pain continuesthe action sequence till he is satisfied with the end result. Then he opts for medical treatment.

"He is a real hero. The injury needs at least ten stitches but our hero valiantly completed the shot," says an admiring Samudra.

It is pack up time at the set - a railway station at Ramoji Film City and the director finds time to talk about Mahanandi, produced by R.S. Movie ProductionsAnasuyadevi and R. Srinivas (presenter).

"The film is about friendship. Perhaps the best after Sholay with friendship as the main theme," he continues. "If Srihari's character (in the film) is like Lord Shiva, then hero Sumanth's role can be compared to the accompanying Nandi. He is like Mahanandi to Srihari. All because when Sumanth is in difficulties, Srihari came to his support. When it is believed that no force on earth can separate the bonding barring death, how such great friends do fall apart - because of a girl and love forms the main plot. Lot of interesting twists and unexpected turns give fresh feel to the story (written by Ghatikachalam)." Anushka of Super fame plays the role of a London returned. Sumanth is placed as her bodyguard, the director informs. "The songs are melodiously tuned by Kamalakar. We shot two songs on Sumanth and Anushka at Chikmagalur and Ooty. The highlight apart from mind-blowing performances is the action scenes designed by Kanal Kannan, Ram-Lakshman and Horseman Babu.

"One of these actions scenes is filmed in rain effect by using a 500 frames camera, perhaps for the first time in Telugu cinema. And the climax takes the cake. Shot for 15 days by using a train, a helicopter and 15 jeeps as props, at three locations - Nandyala, Hyderabad and Bangalore in the climax scene besides the lead stars about 300 junior artistes participated. I am confident that with so much natural feel and grandiose in action and romantic scenes and with such a novel story line, the film may turn out to be the year's biggest grosser," states a confident looking Samudra who wrote the screenplay too. Slated for release in the third week of November, the film stars - Suman, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Venumadhav, L.B. Sriram, Lakshmipathi, A.V.S., and Kovai Sarala.
