Impressive jugalbandi

GUDIPOODI SRIHARI

The exchange of melodies between sitar player Madhu Sarathi Nanduri and vocalist Modumudi Sudhakar was engaging.

PERFECT BLEND The concert was a mix of solos that culminated in a jugalbandi.

Under the auspices of Rasamayi, US-based sitar player Madhu Sarathi Nanduri and Vijayawada's Carnatic vocalist of repute Modumudi Sudhakar gave a programme last week at Telugu University auditorium. The concert was a mix of solo recitals culminating in a jugalbandi.

Madhu had his first lessons in sitar from his father Parthasarathy and then continued under the tutelage of Pandit S. Sankar Rao and Pandit Atmaram of Hyderabad. After moving to the US for his studies and job, he went under the tutelage of Ustad Vilayat Khan. After maturing into a seasoned player , Madhu gave a number of concerts in the US itself.

His counterpart in the concert, M. Sudhakar, is a music producer at All India Radio, Vijayawada. He is the grandson of the late Parupalli Ramakrishniah Panthulu, an icon in the Carnatic field.

The programme started with Madhu playing Yaman, with a composition in Teental in all the three speeds, rising to a climax in the final drut part. Ustad Javed accompanied him on tabla. Sudhakar followed with Endaro Mahanubhavulu, the Pancharatna Krithi in Sriraga and Sangeetha Samrajya in Mohana Kalyani. His elaboration of Pantuvarali for Ennagaanu Ramabhajana of Ramadas was a fine rendition. The swaras he presented in it put his rich manodharma to view. He concluded with a composition of Dr M. Balamurali Krishna - Bhavame Mahabhagyamu in Raga Kapi. Dwaram Satyanarayana Rao of AIR Hyderabad on violin and Parupalli Subbaraya Phalgun on mridangam gave good support.

Then came the jugalbandi part of the recital. Raga Mohana and its equivalent Bhoopali in Hindusthani were the choice of the Carnatic vocalist and the sitarist. Madhu followed up Sudhakar's tanam with jod and jhala.

Sudhakar sang a pallavi set to Adi Thalam, which was followed with a gat by Madhu in Teen Taal.
