Bold, buoyant, beautiful

Having lit up the screen in three recent hits, she is eager to press the advantage. Meet Asin.

With a good script, I hope to do a memorable performance.
TALK OF THE TOWN: Having been paired with all the top heroes, Asin has become a household name.
Asin is only a dozen films old. But she is already the talk of the town. Having become a household name after "Ghajini", the young and buoyant star has had an especially happy Deepavali. She is the leading lady in four new releases.
In a freewheeling conversation she talks about her films and her plans for the future. Excerpts.
Well, may be you can say something about your name, beautifully different?
It is original and a combination of Sanskrit and English, meaning unblemished and pure. It is contemporary just in keeping with the spirit of our family, a mixture of East and West, neither too orthodox nor too modern.
With well-educated parents, it is rather curious that you chose to enter cinema.
I like acting. I am here because I enjoy my work. It is not for the money. I dabbled in everything, including classical dance, since the age of three. And I didn't miss any competition in school, elocution, debate, poetry writing, singing, dance, drama... you name it I was there.
I started modelling at the age of 14, and anchoring comparing for stage shows.
The offer to act in the Malayalam film, `Narendran Magal,' came and soon I found myself busy with a few Telugu movies. There was no looking back. The Tamil industry and audience have been most encouraging and ``God Father" is my 12th.
Yes. Your career graph has been amazing. Within a year you have acted with the four top heroes of Tamil Vijay, Vikram, Ajit and Surya. How did this happen?
God's grace. This is not to deny that a lot of hard work has gone into it. I didn't spare myself in using the opportunities given to me. It was a happy mix of luck and endeavour.
But I wish to say this. I have just begun and have a lot to learn, a long way to go.
Your presence has contributed in no small measure to the success of `Ghajini.' Comment.
It is team-work. Everyone has pulled his weight, and done a great job. Direction, camera, music... all of them put their heart and soul into the film and it shows. It is not fair to attribute the credit to just one person.
You did not have any training in acting. Do you think it is necessary?
Well, I'm managing without any institute coaching. But I cannot make a sweeping statement, whether it helps or not.
Your first film in Tamil was "M. Kumaran son of Mahalakshmi" with `Jeyam' Ravi. Curiously Shreya, who paired with him, has got the chance to act with Rajini. Isn't that a little ironic?
It would have been really wonderful to have got the chance. But as I said earlier, I have been quite lucky and believe that one gets only what one is destined to and deserves. Anyway, my plate is full and I have no reason to complain.
What do you think of subjects with two heroines? First, I don't see them as two-heroine subjects. I see them as characters. Why, `Ghajini' has two heroines and both are important to the story.
Generally, I accept the roles only after looking at the script making sure that I have scope to perform. So whether it is one or two doesn't matter.
Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil... what next? Hindi perhaps?
Right now I am concentrating only in the South. Let me first establish myself here and then think of Hindi.
Who are your favourite stars ?
I don't want to get into that. For the simple reason I have no favourites. . Each has his/her own strength. ?
Apart from acting, are you interested in any other aspect of cinema?
It is too early to think on those lines. May be later when I have accomplished something noteworthy in acting.
Do you have a dream role in mind?
Not really. But one thing is certain. I do not want to be typecast. Sure, I'd love to do a memorable role. But somebody should come up with that special script. I can't do it myself, can I?
