The city will host a seminar on gender and social-political identities
|
The Hengasara Hakkina Sangha (HHS), an organisation working in the area of gender, rights and law, is conducting a seminar on Politics of Locations: Issues of Gender and Identities in Contemporary India on November 10 and 11 here in association with Hivos, India, and Nirnaya. The seminar on November 10 begins at 9.30 a.m., Vidyadeep College, Ulsoor Road.
The seminar is looking at identity politics as the core issue in ongoing debates relating to categorisation within reservation, uniform civil code, communalisation of society, politics of the Right and critique of developmental projects by Adivasi and environmental groups. It is also looking at social movements by Dalits, Adivasis and sexuality groups that are raising political questions and issues around social justice on the axis of identity. HHS sees the need to further clarity on issues of gender and identity, build alliances across identity groups, explore ways to allow for differences to be respected and strengthen possibilities of common struggles. While the discourse of difference and identity has been voiced by the Dalit movement, not much has been done on gender, difference and identity. The seminar is part of an attempt to build such a discourse.
HHS holds the perspective that any question of social justice has to deal with a variety of identity groups such as women's groups, human rights groups, students organisations, Dalit groups, and environmental groups.
The first day of the seminar will feature theoretical and empirical presentations on politics and location of identities, the different kind of identity formations in Karnataka in the last three decades, issues raised by Dalit feminism, Dalit writing in Karnataka with special focus on Dalit identity and women, and debates around the Women's Bill. Speakers include Sudha Sitaram, Rajendra Chenni, Sharmila Rege, Women's Studies, Pune University, Mogalli Ganesh, Hampi University and Rekha Pappu, CIEFL, Hyderabad, Veena Gowda, Women's rights lawyer, Mumbai, and others.
The second day features presentations on faith and ideology, Islam, gender and women, feminist theology, sexualities, queer politics and women in India, patriarchies, new forms of resistance and building alliances for rights of women. The speakers include Yoginder Sikhand, former Reader, Islamic Studies, Humdard University, Delhi, Evangeline Anderson-Rajkumar, Women's Studies, UTC, Bangalore, Shalini Mahajan, Labia, Mumbai.
The seminar is open to all those who are interested in addressing these questions. For details call 26639884.
