Remembering a royal legacy

K.C. ASOK

Concerts were organised to observe the jayanthi of Chitra Tirunal and Setu Parvathi Bayi.

Music concerts by several noted Carnatic musicians marked the cultural programmes organised by Sri Swati Tirunal Sangeetha Sabha to observe Sree Chitra Tirunal and Setu Parvathi Bayi Jayanthi in Thiruvananthapuram recently. The programmes began with a recital by Rudrapattanam brothers (R.N. Tyagarajan and R.N. Taranathan).

Pure tradition

The concert, which began with a rare Adi tala varnam in Sarasangi (`Intharamo... '), was in line with the pure Carnatic tradition. Taranathan chose Arabhi (the navarathri kriti, `Pahi parvata... ') for elaboration, while Kalyani (`Paripahi mamayi' set to Mishrachappu talam) was the choice of Tyagarajan, the elder brother. Syama Shastri's `Parvathi ninu ne..' in an unfamiliar ragam, Kalgada, preceded the main piece. The main composition was a ragam tanam pallavi in Bhairavi (`Tamarasa dala netri... '), set to Adi talam in chawka kalam.

Violin maestro M. Chandrasekharan was a delight for the listeners, as usual. Every raga or manodharma swara he played had a sublime grace. Thiruvananthapuram V. Surendran on the mridangam and Thrikkakkara Y. N. Santharam on the ganchira, put up a seasoned performance.

The next day saw Thrissur V. Ramachandran in fine form with a druthakala concert that had traces of his guru GNB's style. Poorvikalyani (`Jnanamu soga radha... ') and Sankarabharanam (`Bhakta parayana... ') were given a detailed treatment with the latter being the main raga. Ragam tanam pallavi, sung later in Subhapanthuvarali, was set to Khanda jati tripuda talam. The pallavi `Eesane Jagadeesane... ' was tagged on with kalpanaswarams in ragas Subhapanthuvarali, Kanada, Bouwli and Revathi.

The highlight of P. Subramanium's concert was the choice of a few rare kritis and mathematical precision of swaras. The concert started with a rare varnam in Andolika, `Needaya radha... ,' composed by GNB. Another rare item was `Saravana bhava ... ' in Pasupathi Priya.

Matangi Satyamoorthi chose to include only popular ragas such as Abheri, Kalyani, Madhyamavathi and Kharaharapriya in her concert.

Anayyampatty Ganesan, who is also a talented jalatarangam artiste, gave a vocal recital on the penultimate day.

O.S. Tyagarajan's concert was a real feast for the listeners. The sruthi sudha recital followed by touching ragabhavas included pieces such as `Anuraga mule nee... ' in Saraswati ragam, `Sarasaksha... ' in Pantuvarali, `Pahiparvata... ' in Arabhi, and `Enteveduko... ' in Saraswati manohari. The main piece was a ragam tanam pallavi (`Nigama sudha vinodhini... ') in Todi. The raga alapana was exquisite.

The vocalist also attempted srutiibedam at madhyamam and nishadham, giving different hues to the raga. The concluding piece was `Vayyla looka... ' in Neelambari (raga used for lullabies), a right note to end on.
