An African safari

N.J. NAIR

A Malayalam serial shot in South Africa will soon hit the small screen.

A modern-day tale of a Malayali family marooned on a jungle will soon be seen on the small screen.

Their battle for survival, a la the `Swiss Family Robinson,' and their adventures on the island can be seen in `Kadalinakkare,' a serial directed by Suresh Unnithan.

A cruise turns into a nightmare when a storm forces a family to seek refuge in a fishing boat. However, another storm batters the boat and the members of the family get separated. They find themselves in a jungle inhabited by a primitive tribe.

Although everything looks strange and dangerous, the shipwrecked family befriends the people and the wild animals.

According to producer S. Karthikeyan, this is the first television serial that has been filmed by a team of Malayali artistes and technicians in South Africa. "The serial is a safari through the African jungles. Sukanya, Indrans, Anand and Suma Jayaram ,star in the serial," he says.

Chimpanzees and lions are shown coming to the rescue of the family.

"The animals are integral to the plot and are not there just to lend colour," he says.

The script written by Karthikeyan and Robert was given to an animal trainer in the Jim Stockle studio in South Africa a month before the shooting began.

Jim Stockle Studio, spanning 1,500 acres was the main location of the serial. The studio is located in a lion park.

As many as 275 episodes have been completed and the director plans to shot in the jungles in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The locations have been identified and work will begin soon, says Karthikeyan.
