ROLE PLAY: K.N. Jagannatha Varma as Kunthi in the play `Karna Sapatham.'
Actor K.N. Jagannatha Varma donned a new role, that of Kunthi. He played to perfection the role of Kunthi in `Karna Sapatham,' which was staged in Thiruvananthapuram recently. His younger brother K. N. Surendranatha Varma, a retired college professor, enacted Karna.
The programme was organised by Thiruvananthapuram Kshetriya Kshema Sabha to observe the 110th birth anniversary of Maharani Setu Lakshmi Bayi.
The episode showed Kunthi visiting Karna prior to the beginning of the war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. The play opened with a scene showing Kunthi making an impassioned plea for peace. Jagannatha Varma's histrionic skills helped him effectively portray the emotional scene.
Varma started learning Kathakali at the age of 11 from Pallippuram Gopalan Nair Asan.
In 1963, when he got selection to the Kerala police, he had to withdraw from the Kathakali scene. Later, his entry into the tinsel world left him no time to devote to Kathakali.
The last time he appeared on stage as a Kathakali artiste was in 1990. Now the brothers are under the guidance of Kalamandalam Sreekumar.
Varma has mostly done female characters like Poothana, Damayanthi, Panchali and Sairandri.
