Total family entertainer

M.L. NARASIMHAM

`Chukkallo Chandrudu' has all the trappings of a hit flick.

FRESH FLAVOUR Sada and Siddharth in the film.

A few meters away from the din of the main road in Secunderabad in a blind alley of a by lane one comes across the famed Chiraan fort. The majestic structures are a combination of Persian, Armenian and modern architecture. Following the power cable from the generator van after crossing the lush green Australian carpet grass topped lawn one reaches the unit of Creative Commercials that is shooting for Chukkallo Chandrudu. A "total family entertainer," as the film's presenter K.S. Rama Rao puts it. His son and actor Vallabh dons the mantle of the producer. While Manirathnam's associate Sivakumar makes his directorial debut.

The artistes led by the legend Akkineni Nageswara Rao are Siddharth, Sada, Charmie and Salome and a host of other major actors. The young director watches with intensity as his cinematographer Sameer Reddy's camera frames the emotions of the veteran and the young actors from that crucial sequence. "We are shooting the climax portion," says the affable presenter. Watching his hero he says, "he is a talented boy. He not only wrote the story but now a live wire for the entire production. He inspires and infuses lot of energy into the entire unit comprising of so many branches of filmmaking. His urge to learn and his creative ability to come up always with something new are amazing and infectious."

Has he discovered him after watching Nuvvosthanante... his first Telugu film? "Apart from that film, I have seen him earlier in Boys and Yuva, I was attracted by that spark in him. It was just like in Kamal Hassan say 25 years ago. I was a great admirer of Kamal then. And today I found the same kind of enthusiasm and spark in Siddharth. He is totally involved in the project. Along with the director Siva and Kona Venkat he wrote the screenplay that unleashes a fresh flavour. The theme is set in the urban milieu and deals with modern youth."

It is the story of a young man playing hide and seek with three girls like the moon juggling amidst the stars. "How our hero justifies the title is the lead point. The three heroines have bubbly youthful roles."

Sivakumar is still engrossed in completing the day's shoot. "You know Siva has done a course on film theory at Orlando, U.S.A.," continues Rama Rao . "He is exceptionally talented. Naturally, with such academic background, he is a storehouse of knowledge on films. He is unravelling his brilliance in each shot with a new approach in entertainment format," smiles the talent spotter.

That brings us to the role the thespian is playing. The evergreen actor's presence on the sets is infusing fresh vigour to the other actors present. "He plays grandfather to Siddharth and supports him. We are happy that after a long hiatus he is returning to films with this venture. Waheeda Rehman appears in a brief cameo as his spouse."

With an exceptionally talented actor-technicians team Rama Rao is confident of emerging a sure winner.

"On the technical front, we have Abhik Mukhopadhay and Sameer Reddy as the cinematographers. I was impressed by Abhik's work in Bunty Aur Bubbly and Rain Coat. He has done most of the work for this film but due to prior commitment has to leave the job to his equally talented colleague Sameer. Besides the climax, Sameer will shoot the rest of the three songs in Hyderabad. Sreekar Prasad is editing the film and Chakri has composed the music. For the first time I am working with Chakri. He has given excellent music that has a new sound and rhythm. The audio cassettes will be out in the market on December 10 and the film will hit the screens on January 14."
