The conferment of the title, `Nadhadweepa Kalanidhi' on flute maestro N. Ramani was the highlight of the recent sixth anniversary celebrations of Nadhadweepam Trust, Tiruchi. Dr. Ramani was felicitated on the occasion in recognition of his contribution towards Carnatic music and was presented a gold coin and a purse.
During the previous two years, the Trust had bestowed similar honours on mridangam maestro Vellore Ramabadran and clarionet mastero A. K. C. Natarajan.
Promoting music
V. V. Sundaram of Cleveland (U.S.) in his presidential address said the Nadhadweepam Trust was rendering yeoman service for the promotion of Carnatic music, despite financial constraints. He called upon music lovers to lend a helping hand to the successful functioning of the Trust.
N. Sekar, secretary, Rasika Ranjana Sabha, Tiruchi, chief guest of the evening, said his sabha was always prepared to help the Trust in its activities. Mridangam maestro Tiruchi R. Thayumanavan said that Tiruchi Ramesh, Managing Trustee, had the blessings of his guru and hence was able to render this kind of service to music.
According to R. Gunasekaran, Regional Assistant Director, Department of Art and Culture, the Trust was rendering wonderful service and had added another feather to its cap by honouring Dr. Ramani.
N. Ramani in his acceptance speech said though he was honoured by many sabhas and organisations in the past, he cherished this particular honour accorded to him at Srirangam, the place of Lord Ranganatha.
K. Ramprasad gave the welcome address and Tiruchi K. Ramesh proposed a vote of thanks.
The programme was followed by the flute concert of Dr. Ramani, accompanied by Nagai Sriram on the violin, Guruvayur Durai on the mridangam, Kovai Mohan Ram on ghatam and Malaikkottai R.M. Deenadayalu on the morsing. His recitation includes "Marivere Gathi" (Ananda Bhairvai), "O Rangasayi" (Kamboji), "Akilandeshwari" (Dwijavanthi) and so on.
