Sumangali Puja

A Sumangali Puja and Pushpa Yagam will be held at the Dhanvantri temple, Melpudupet, near Walajapet on December 14. About 1008 `sumangalis' would be participating in the puja.

The Sumangali Puja forms the culmination of the first anniversary celebrations of the Mantra Pradhishta — an event held on November 28 last year, when 54 crore Dhanvantri mantras written on paper by devotees were placed beneath the sanctum sanctorumbefore the installation of the presiding deity of Lord Dhanvantri. The kumbabhishekam of the Dhanvantri temple was performed later on December 15, 2004. On November 28 this year, another 1.5 crore mantras, written on books supplied by the Dhanvantri Arogya Peedam were placed under the spot where a `Mantra Stupi' (pillar) is to be erected.

According to S. Muralidhara Swamigal, founder-trustee of the Peedam, devotees could continue to send the mantras, which would be placed under a new pillar to be erected every year on November 28.

The celebrations began on November 27 with a Nakshatra Parikara Homam by devotees belonging to the 27 stars in astrology. A mud pot with 108 herbs was placed inside the `homa kundam' and sealed with cow dung. This process is called `pudam poduvadhu,' where the herbs get blackened and turn into medicine. The ash, mixed with oil contributed by devotees would be given as `soornam' and `prasadam' till Sankranti (Pongal).

On December 15, there would be a special `abhishekam' and `alankarams' for the Dhanvantri idol to mark the first anniversary of the Kumbabhishekam of the temple. Those who wish to write mantras may send Rs. five per book plus courier charges or Rs. 70 to cover the cost of 10 books plus courier charges to Sri Dhanvantri Arogya Peedam, Melpudupet, Walajapet - 632 513 (ph: 04172 -230274, 230033, cell: 94433 30203).
