The Hidimbasura Samhara episode allowed for grand drama

The Yakshagana festival held in Mysore recently was proof of the dedicated efforts of Prof. Krishna Bhat from the Yakshagana repertory of M.G.M. College in Udupi.
The Hidimbasura Samhara, an episode from the Mahabharatha, was performed at the Mahajana Education Society.
The story begins with the captivating episode of the Pandavas' escape from the wax house, the destruction of Hidimbasura and Hidimbi's love for Bheema.
The episode was depicted in all its grandeur by the artistes, including Prakash Chandra (Bheema) and Madhava Naik (Hidimbi). Charming aharya, dialogues, agility in sanchari, excellent coherence with the music ensemble were the appreciable aspects of the performance.
Proportionate angasoustava, lucidity of pada-charis in coherence with the jatis of reverberating chande (Krishnamurthy Bhat) and maddale (Devadas Rao) were exhilarating. However, poor lighting was an impediment to such a colourful performance.
The inaugural show of the four-days festival was held at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Mysore. Rukmini Kalyana was held at the Kalamandira in Mysore on the concluding day of the festival. Though a presentation of the episode of Sri Krishna's marriage with Rukmini, it was not portrayed in tune with its mythological importance.
Some aspects such as the attire of the bride Rukmini (Prasad Kumar) were disappointing, despite good support of vocals and percussions.
Unlike the earlier dramatic performance by the artistes, Rukmini Kalyana did not quite touch the sublimity of the episode.
