It is said that Maharshi Vedavyaasa attained peace of mind and got a sense of fulfilment only after composing Srimad Bhagavatham. No wonder this great composition continues to bestow serenity and tranquility on the ordinary mortals who listen to the recital of these slokas or discourses based on it. In these days of frustration and stress those in the evening of their lives look forward to an opportunity to listen to such discourses.
Keeping this in mind, Sri Ayyappa Puja Sangham, Sri Nama Sankeerthana Trust, Coimbatore Brahmana Maha Sabha and Perur Vaidhikal Mutt joined hands to organise Radha Madhava Kalyana Mahotsavam by Erode Rajamani Bhagavathar and party and Srimad Bhagavatha Sapthaham by Brahmasri Sundar Kumar at Makara Jothi Mahal, Coimbatore.
During the Sapthaham the huge hall was filled to capacity and people sat drinking in each word that came from Sri Sundar Kumar.
He kept the interest of the audience alive with his smoothly flowing narration, sprinkled with enjoyable similes and anecdotes. It was a pleasure to listen to the slokas in his immaculate diction. He explained certain terms in an uncomplicated manner giving the thrill of understanding to the listener.
His frequent definitions in English and the extremely pertinent quotations added dignity to his discourses.
His explanations were full of depth, drawn from his own profound learning and that of the great interpreters of Bhagavatham.
The Coimbatoreans were thrilled when he referred to the Sringeri Acharya's interpretation of the name `Coimbatore' as `ko ayam puri' which means the city which keeps searching for the divine knowledge about `Self'. His similes were straightforward and delightful. He compared knowledge to the outer shell and devotion to the sweet poornam of the `kozhukkattai.'
His reference to Draupadi's greatness was moving.
The story of Puranjana was highly allegorical and educative and made one realise that as every soul is living in the `navadwarapuri'(the body with nine holes), it is bound to face the ravages of time and fall a prey to old age, sickness and finally death.
Being well-educated and having worked with various organisations and in various capacities, Sundar Kumar is conversant with the modern gizmos and the topical issues. Hence his appropriate analogies explain as well as entertain.
The special appeal of Sri Sundar Kumar is his self-effacing humility. His tone does not command or preach.
