IN A NEW GARB: Mohanlal and Leila in `Mahasamudram.'
Many films have been made on the fisher folk in Kerala. Always fraught with danger, their lives and their relationship with the sea make good material for dramatic stories. As for the film maker, the visual effect of the sea is an added attraction. One of the most famous examples of films inspired by the sea is `Chemmeen.'
`Mahasamudram' (`The Ocean') is S. Janardanan's debut feature film. Standing on a beach at Adimalathura, near Vizhinjam, about 30 from Thiruvananthapuram city, where the shooting of the film is in progress, Janardanan says, "This is the first film in Mohanlal's career where he is donning the role of a fisherman. So, he is taking special interest in making it a success."
Lively football match
The scene being shot on the beach is a football game. Clad in a black shirt and shorts, Mohanlal seems to be enjoying himself. Jagathy Sreekumar in the robes of a Christian priest takes the first kick. Mohanlal gets the ball and dribbles it gracefully, and passes it to Rahman. Indrans keeps vigil at the goal post. Innocent, as the referee, signals the kick to be taken. The female lead Leila also joins the game wearing a blue sari, red blouse and a head band. It is a scene full of action and joie de vivre.
`Mahasamudram' tells the story of relationships in the coastal villages. Isahak (Mohanlal) falls in love with Devi (Leila) and marries her. But circumstances send Devi to jail and they are unable to live together for even a day. Years later, she gets parole for 15 days and joins Isahak.
"The couple decide to forget everything else and make the most of the short period they have together. The football game is one of those happy times," explains Janardanan.
Though this is his first film, Dr. Janardanan has been involved with theatre right from his college days. He earned a doctorate in Indian theatre in 1995. He has directed several popular television serials, including `Vasundhara Medicals,' `Muhurtham,' `Salabhanjika.' Mahasamudram is produced by Suresh Kumar for Revathy Kalamandir.
Lyrics penned by Kaithapram are set to music by M. Jayachandran, and the singers are K.J. Jesudas, G. Venugopal and K.S. Chitra. Shaji, the cameraman, captures the scenic beauty of the beach. Still photography is by Abhilash. The film is slated for release in January.
