Engaging veena recital

Mandapaka Sridevi's veena recital showed her skills in wielding the instrument.

Sangeetha Janakulam organised a veena recital by Mandapaka Sridevi in the premises of Sri Raghavendra Swami Temple last Sunday.

Sangeetha Janakulam is an organisation that conducts five-year training programs in Carnatic music and awards its own diploma, Gana Praveena, in vocals and veena.

Well-accompanied on mridangam by S. Janardhan Rao, Sridevi started her recital with Navaraga Malika Varnam followed by Vandeham (Hamsadhwani), Sobhillu (Jaganmohini) and Sarasamukhi (Goudamalher) before she took up Aparadhamula of Tyagaraja (Lathangi) for elaborate treatment. Her alapana and the rendering of the krithi and the swarakalpana stood testimony to her capabilities in the expression of Manodharma.

She then evocatively rendered the krithis Sudhamayi (Amrithavarshini) and Bagayenayya (Chendrajyothi). Her effort in elaborating Manasu Swaadheenamaithe (Sankarabharanam) next not only revealed her dexterity with the veena but also her aesthetic concerns in expounding the raga, swara and sahitya bhavas of the composition. A devotional composition in Janasammodini and the Brindavani Tillana of Balamurali constituted the tailpiece.

Young Janardhana Rao lent good support and also executed a sensible thani. The founder-president of the Janakulam, I.V.L. Sastry (noted vocalist and mridangist), who takes most of the classes despite being in his late seventies, proposed a vote of thanks and informed the audience that in the last 25 years, about 5,000 pupils of all age groups were awarded the diploma `Gana Praveena'.
