The chosen ones

THE WINNER Freelance journalist Anuj Chopra is one of the three winners of this CNN Young Journalist Award- 2005

Awards, the sub-continent has many in the field of journalism. But this one is a little unique, in the sense that it is not home-grown and yet scouts for talents in the region.

And keeping the tradition on since the last three years, the CNN Young Journalist Award 2005 was given to not two as before, but three media men this time in celebration of the organiser, CNN's 25th anniversary. Awarded in print and electronic media, the third category that the channel added this time is photography. While all the winners in the three categories have gone to Indians this time, Shimaila Matri Dawood from the Karachi-based Newsline magazine was chosen the runner-up in the print/online category. The winner in this category is a freelance journalist from India, Anuj Chopra. Anuj was chosen for the award for an article on the right of cooperatives societies to resist membership to their community

In the television segment, the winner is Ravinder Sharma from Aaj Tak. Harshbabu V.H from Indiavision channel is adjudged the cameraperson of the year. While Ravinder Sharma won the award for a sting operation on the corrupt environment of Tihar jail, a feature based on the folklore of Malabar tradition in North Kerala won Harshbabu the award in the photography segment.

Patna-based Amit Shrivastava of Sahara Samay is the runner-up in the TV category.

A good response

Says Jill Dougherty, Managing Editor, Asia Pacific, CNN International, before giving away the awards to the winners at a glittering function in New Delhi this past week, "We are pleased with the number and the quality of responses that we have received from India and Pakistan over the past three years and hope that we are able to continue our pursuit of acknowledging and honouring journalistic excellence."

While Anuj and Ravinder will soon make a trip to the CNN headquarters in Atlanta for a week where they will interact with the channel's experienced editorial and core teams, Harishbabu will visit the CNN regional headquarters in Hong Kong.
