Veteran Dancer

Bharatanatyam exponent Gayatri Devi performed at the Triveni Chamber Theatre this past week to an appreciative audience. Gayatri Devi, a disciple of Guru Rukmini Devi Arundale and an alumna of her institution, Kalakshetra, Chennai, is currently based in the U.S.

Music Recitals

Ustad Yunus Hussain Khan Memorial Society presented at the Habitat Centre, a vocal recital by Ahsan Ahmed Khan Niazi of the Agra gharana and a sitar recital by Shubhendra Rao, disciple of Pt. Ravi Shankar. The Centre also was host to an evening of Amir Khusrau, presented in prose, verse and music by Dilip Shankar. City Minstrels presented Christmas music, "An Ode to Joy". Alliance Francaise de Delhi presented "Musique baroque en Inde" by Thierry Gregoire quartet at The Cathedral Church of The Redemption, North Avenue, besides a Flamenco guitar concert by Pedro Soler at the Teen Murti auditorium.

Dance Programmes

While Odissi danseuse Ileana Citaristi, a disciple of the late Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, presented a recital at the India Habitat Centre earlier this week, Souraja Tagore from Kolkata, disciple of Guru Abhoy Pal, presented a Bharatanatyam recital at the IIC. Ganesa Natyalaya presented Bharatanatyam arangetrams of Paridhi Joshi and Ruchi Gupta, both disciples of Saroja Vaidyanathan, at the IIC and Triveni respectively.

Art Exhibitions

The art exhibitions on view included Art Motif's group show of abstract art by some eminent and young artists at the Visual Art Gallery; National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad's annual show of innovations in design; a painting show by seven young artists from Nepal, presented by the Jasutara Art Foundation for Children; M.K. Puri's exhibition of paintings, drawings, ceramic sculpture and metallic reliefs at Gallery Damayanti; Gallery Threshold's "A Journey Within"; and "Hope", a solo show of 22 large works in acrylics; watercolours on paper by Sanjeev Verma presented by Gallery Alternatives; and 100th exhibition of paintings by R.S. Gill at the AIFACS, Rafi Marg.
