Honour for artists

Rasika Ranjani Sabha will confer the title `Kala Ratna' on Bombay Sisters on January 3 during the annual music festival at Asthika Samajam, Venus Colony. The festival will be inaugurated by N. Murali, Joint Managing Director of The Hindu and president of The Music Academy. The title, which carries a cash award of Rs. 25,000, a medallion, a shawl and a citation, will be conferred by Lalgudi G. Jayaraman. T. K. Govinda Rao and R. Ramachandran, secretary, Hamsadhwani, will felicitate.

Slide show

Rupa Gopal presents a slide show on leading Siva temples of South India, at the Music Academy on December 18 at 8.30 a.m. The temples' sculptural heritage, with the aid of select pieces of carnatic music will be the highlights. It will include a section on the Nayanmars, as painted by S. Rajam.

Competition

To propagate the works and compositions of Dr. Rukmini Ramani, Sivan Fine Arts Academy and Shivanugraha Utsav Committee will conduct dance and music competition on Dec. 30 and Jan. 8, 2006, respectively. Contact Ph: 5529 5949/2472 2928.

Music festival

The annual music festival of Sri Rama Bhaktha Jana Samaj is starting on December 18. The programme will be inaugurated by L. Sabaretnam, director, Chennai Petroleum Corporation, will confer the title `Sangeetha Mamani,' on Sudha Raghunathan and `Sangeetha Kala Seva Rathna' on Dr. Nalli Kuppusamy Chettiar at Padma Seshadri School, T. Nagar at 5.30 p.m.

Ramana Jayanthi

Sri Ramana Maharishi's 126th Jayanthi will be celebrated on December 18, 4.15 p.m. at Nanganallur Modern Senior Secondary School. Swami Vimoorthananda of Sri Ramakrishna Mutt, Mylapore, will give special discourse.

Drama festival

The Nataka Academy will be conducting the drama festival at `Sarva Dharma Maithri Hall,' Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan from December 23 to January 1, 2006. Competitions such as kolam, quiz, games and cookery will be conducted everyday at 3 p.m. Entry fee will not be charged for both drama and competitions. Kudanthai Mali, dramatist, will be conferred the title `Nataka Seva Rathna' on December 23. For details contact Ph: 2461 7559.

Japanese film show

ABK-AOTS DOSAKAI, Tamil Nadu Centre, is organising a Japanese video film show and Bharathanatyam by Emi Mayuri to be held at the Russian Cultural Centre on December 18 at 6 p.m. Ms. Sakura Ozaki, Vice Consul, Consulate General of Japan, will inaugurate. The film show will start at 6 p.m. and the dance recital will begin at 6.30 p.m.

Annual Commemoration

Raagalaya foundation is organising its 3rd commemoration day celebrating Guru vandanam to Alathur Venkatesa Iyer at Sastri Gokhale Institute, Mylapore. P.B. Srineevos will be the chief guest and T.K. Govinda Rao, Prof. S. Jankiraman and R. Srinivasan will be the guests of honour. There will be a vocal concert by Sirkali G. Sivachidambaram at 4.05 p.m.

Kala Kruthi fest

The December 2005 Music Festival of Kala Kruthi (Ph: 2819 0154; 2819 2285) will be inaugurated today, at 6 p.m., by Sujatha Vijayaraghavan. Suguna Purushothaman will render a music concert. N. C. Soundaravalli will sing on Dec.17, followed by Jayalakshmi Santhanam on Dec. 19 and Suguna Varadachari (Dec.21). The concerts will be held at Anantha Bhoosana Kalyana Mandapam, No.118, Gengu Reddy Road, Egmore, at 6.30 p.m. on all the days.
