The lion in action

VIJAY GEORGE

Dileep dons the role of a politician in `Lion.'

Lion is the hero's symbol in the election, and it is an indication of his character.

POLITICS AND THE POLITICIAN: Dileep in a scene from the film `Lion.'

It's never easy taking on the powerful and the mighty. But Krishna Kumar dares to do just that, with sheer grit and his adamant stand against nepotism and hypocrisy. But the hitch is that those pitted against him include his father and relatives.

His escapades are being told in `Lion,' the shooting of which is going on in and around Kochi. Dileep dons the role of the young politician Krishna Kumar in the film.

After the success of `Runway,' director Joshy has teamed up with Dileep and the scriptwriter duo Siby K. Thomas and Udayakrishnan for `Lion.'

Frenetic filming

Things happen at a frenetic pace inside a huge factory at Thammanam where the shooting is taking place . The camera follows Sai Kumar as he walks into his cabin while giving instructions to someone on his mobile.

The director approves the shot in one take. Dileep, who is dubbing for the scenes that have already been canned, is scheduled to arrive at the location.

As the crew prepares for the next shot, the scriptwriters give more insight to what the story is all about.

"Balagangadhara Menon (Kalasala Babu) is an all-powerful minister. He has married his daughters to IAS and IPS officers, who are minting money from various businesses. Krishna Kumar, his son, is averse to all these and defeats his father in the election. He becomes a popular minister and this changes the family equations ."

Why is called `Lion' ? "Lion is the hero's symbol in the election, and it is an indication about his character . Just as a lion rules over the rest of the animals regardless of size, Krishna Kumar proves he can make an impact on his family members, many of whom are more powerful than him ," smiles Udayakrishnan.

Kavya Madhavan, the heroine in `Lion,' plays Shari, a schoolteacher. She is the grand-daughter of Gopalakrishna Pillai, who had brought Balagangadhara Menon into politics. Shari and her widowed mother live like servants in Menon's house after her grandfather's death.

A misunderstanding leads to the hapless mother and daughter being shown the door. Years later, Shari has nothing but contempt for the family.

`Lion' is produced under the banner of N.N.S Arts.

The lyrics by Kaithpram are being composed by Deepak Dev. `Lion' will hit the movie halls towards the end of January.
