The darker side of life

The social play `Judgement' was well handled by director Mohan Senapathi.

Rasaranjani, which is endeavouring to promote Telugu drama, presented its latest production titled Judgement at Thyagaraya Gana Sabha. The play was written by S.A. Rao and directed by Mohan Senapathi. The story runs around a young man named Pratap, son of a business magnate Balaramamurthy, who leads a reckless life, in the company of his friends Johnny and Gopinath.

A college lecturer in the vicinity, Suryam, falls in love with Kusuma. They decide to marry. But Pratap casts his evil eye on Kusuma. She vehemently protests and even slaps him resulting in her rape and murder. Suryam is shocked to see Kusuma dead, and reports it to the police who arrest the criminals. It is revealed then that the victim is the daughter of head constable Eswarayya. The case goes to court and Pratap is sentenced for life. But Eswarayya thinks that was a small punishment and the criminal would sure come back to commit another crime. So he takes law into his hands and strangles Pratap to death and then goes to court to plead guilty, but with a brave argument on the social implication of such a crime and punishment.

The presiding judge who first gives him life sentence is so moved with the argument, that he resigns to his post and leaves the judgement to the new judge who will occupy his seat. The crime drama was well handled by Mohan Senapathi and kept the audience tense. Rajkiran played the role of Pratap interestingly understanding the import of his role. Nayudu played other powerful role of Eswarayya. Prabhavati appeared as Kusuma. Dhanush and Maruthi Kumar played Pratap's friends. Ramachandramurthy was helpless Suryam and M.V.K. Sarma as sub-inspector were adequate. V. Prasad gave background music and the lighting and stagecraft was by Ram Sankar Sarma. The technical support was laudable.
