Hail the Republic!
"Standard Bearers" on Discovery Channel's Republic Day special
Globalisation has affected our world in more ways than we realise. Not do we regularly buy products off the shelf that used to be available only through trips abroad or gifted by NRI relatives, a lot of the serials folks across the seven seas tune into are available in our own living rooms, thanks to cable television. For their part, the satellite channels are vying to make us feel more at home in our own country. Take January, the month we celebrate Republic Day.
The early morning parade and a spate of songs and dances on patriotic themes are not the only choices couch potatoes get any more when they switch on the tube this January 26.
Discovery Channel brings us two of its very own Republic Day special programmes.
One is "Standard Bearers", which celebrates India's military heritage, and the other is on one of the country's most enduring images, the Kumbh Mela. "In Search of Salvation: the Mahakumbh Mela". The programmes will be aired from 8 to 9 p.m.
Besides, the kids' channel Pogo comes up with a special offering to celebrate Republic Day with a telecast of the Pogo Amazing Kids Awards 2004 and 2005 being shown back to back. Next best thing to the red blazer and an elephant ride?
