Bangalore has yet another landmark on the cultural circuit. In July 2004, President A.P.J Abdul Kalam inaugurated the Purandara Bhavana, the Centre for Performing Arts of the Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha. The inaugural concert was presented by seasoned vocalist Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr. R.K. Srikantan, followed by cultural programmes on the succeeding two days. Ever since, they have been conducting at least two concerts a month. The list of artistes who have performed under the banner of the Sabha reads like a Who's Who of performers, even as they encouraging young promising talent.
Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha, the parent institution, came into being on January 15, 1986, as a registered trust sworn to promote cultural activities with industrialist A. Alagappan as the founder of the trust. Nurtured with vision and care, the Sabha has grown and now has around 540 life members.The cultural centre encompasses a hall which can accommodate 600 persons in perfect acoustic conditions for staging performances in music, dance and drama, and a mini hall in the basement, ideally suited for meetings, discourses, and exhibitions.
On January 26, 27 and 28, Indiranagar Sangeeta Sabha will host a national seminar on Science in Indian Classical Music. A parallel music and dance festival will be held between January 26 and 31 too. The seminar will take place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. while the concerts will begin at 6 p.m. everyday. This year's Purandara award will go to senior Carnatic vocalist, R.K. Srikantan.
