SYED MUTHAHAR SAQAF

Music recitals, Kathak and discourses marked the New Year Special Music Week, organised by the Rasika Ranjana Sabha, Tiruchi.

SPIRITUAL MOOD: Tirutani N. Swaminathan.

Music concerts by leading vocalists, a Kathak performance and discourses, marked the New Year Special Music Week organised by the Rasika Ranjana Sabha, Tiruchi, at the FGN Hall.

The programme commenced with a vocal concert by Madurai R. Sundar, U.S.-based engineer and disciple of T. N. Seshagopalan. He enthralled the audience with his performance that spoke volumes of his experience. Commencing the concert with the Kalyani varnam "Vanajakshi," Sundar tackled "Ranganayagam," (Nayagi), splendidly.

Enjoyable alapana

Sundar's lengthy Khambodi alapana was enjoyable, as was the kirtana, "O Rangasayee."

R. K. Sriramkumar on the violin supported Sundar with expert skill. The tani avartanam by mridangam maestro, Tiruchi Sankaran, followed by Sundar's Khambodi kirtana left the audience spell-bound.

Maharajapuram S. Srinivasan, son of Maharajapuram Santhanam, along with his son Ganesh Viswanathan rendered a vocal concert, which triggered memories of the veteran. Parur M. A. Sundareswaran on the violin and Thanjavur R. Kumar on mridangam kept up the standard.

Pleasing concert

Visalakshi Nityanand presented a pleasing vocal concert accompanied well by Parur M. A. Krishnaswamy on the violin and Karaikkudi V. M. Ganesan on the mridangam. Her gifted voice was at its best in "Brovabarama" (Bahudari).

The fourth day featured devotional Tamil songs rendered by Tirutani N. Swaminathan accompanied by Nellai N. Ravindran on the violin and Tiruvannamalai R. M. Sivakumar on the mridangam.

It was a spiritual experience, the singer offered beginning with Vinayagar Vanakkam. Thirugnanasambanthar's "Rettapadu pann" (Gambeeranattai) was a highlight.

A fine Kathak performance presented by Divya Kasthuri proved a grand finale for the programme. Her footwork was praiseworthy.

Chennai-based devotees of Mysore Ganapathy Sachitananda Swamiji sang bhajans. Discourses for a couple of days were also part of the New Year celebrations. Salem Rukmini delivered discourses on `Inbam Ingae' and `Amaithi Ingae.'
