Aradhana at Srirangam

V. GANAPATHY

Concerts by leading artistes marked Tyagaraja aradhana at Sri Sadguru Sangeetha Sabha.

The aradhana of Sadguru Tyagabrahmam was observed by Sri Sadguru Sangeetha Sabha and Sri Sadguru Tyagabrahma Aradhana trust, Srirangam. Prayers were offered to the panchaloka icon of the saint composer. Veteran musician R. K. Srikantan inaugurated the festival under the presidentship of S. S. N. Murthy, commissioner of Income Tax, Kochi.

The sabha conferred the title "Gnana Vidya Rathnam" on Srikantan and "Nada Vidya Rathnam" on M. Chandrasekaran, violinist and presented them gold medals.

With vocal support from son Rudrapatnam S. Ramakanth, Srikantan started his concert with "Girirajasudha" followed by "Guruleka." It was astonishing that age has not robbed the voice of its timbre and it was evident in the rendering of "Entha Rani."

Srirangam Parthasarathy's musical discourse on Narasimha Prabhava came with the familiar fragrance. Divya nama bhajan by Ramakrishna Hari group was a soothing experience.

Kasturi Rangan gave a concert in the evening. Tiruchi Ganesan's kritis reminded the majestic style of the Alathur Brothers.

"Namakusumamula" (Sri Raga) and "Nadopasana" (Begada) of T. M. Krishna were vintage stuff. Master M. Balamuralikrishna impressed with his usual earnestness. For those who knew D. R. Srivalson J. Menon only as Assistant Director of Agriculture, his concert came as a pleasant surprise. Sanjay Subramanyam's concert had the usual specialities — Harikhambodi, Bhairavi and Mohanam. Raghava Simhan and Ambujam Vedantam led the Pancharatna chorus. The veena concert by Mudikondan Ramesh and Malathi Krishnamani figured in the concluding session that had Neyveli Santhanagopalan enhancing the touch of devotion. Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam, mridangam vidwan, had organised an ensemble, comprising nagaswaram (E. M. Muniappa) flute (Tiruvaiyaru Swaminathan) and morsing (Srirangam Kannan). Anjaneya uthsavam performed with religious fervour brought the curtain down on the aradhana.
