In the footsteps of Rabindranath

The All Bengal Music Conference attracted the best of talent.

Bengal's incessant desire to uphold the banner of classical music manifests itself through musical conferences. The All Bengal Music Conference, established in 1934, is among the very few organisations to keep the flag of music flying. The conference was first inaugurated by none other then Rabindranath Tagore. The Prince of Natur Jogendra Nath Ray along with other musicians and their disciples were instrumental in starting the tradition in old Kolkata.

Thanks to the Conference, the music lovers have been able to enjoy the recitals of artistes like Pandit Vishnu Digamber Palusker, Ustad Allauddin Khan, Ustad Alladia Khan, Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan, Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Pandit Durgalal, Pandit Shambhu Maharaj, Gopikrishna, Jaikumari, Sushri Damyanti Joshi, Pandit Omkarnath Thakur, etc.

This year All Bengal Music Conference 2006 organised a four-day long "Sangeet Mahotsav" earlier this month in collaboration with Jalsaghar at Babu Khelad Ghosh Palace in North Kolkata.

The conference presented young talents like Shankar Bandhu (shehnai), Kumar Mardur (vocal), Aalam Ali Akbar Khan (sarod), Enakshi Das (Oddisi) and artistes like Parthasarathi (sarod), Kartik Sheshadri (sitar), Anuradha Kuber (vocal), Vijay Koperker (vocal), Ustad Shujat Khan (sitar), Shambhauvi Shukla (Kathak) and Pandit Ullas Kashalkar (vocal).

The audience thoroughly enjoyed the performances at the whole night conferences. The artistes were felicitated with medals.

The performance of sitarist Ustad Shujat Khan of Imdadkhani Gharana and upcoming vocalist Kumar Mardur Dharvar came in for much praise.
