STORYTELLER: T.A. Razack's scripts are rooted in real life.
His stories focus on the mind and the spectrum of emotions. His characters connect with the audience as the situations and the characters mirror life with all its spots and blemishes. No wonder then that T.A. Razack's scripts translate into box office successes so often.
It has not been smooth sailing for the writer and his success story reads like a film script. "Those experiences, both sweet and sour, could have added to my understanding of human minds," says Razack with a smile. A former employee of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation, Razack, who hails from Kondotty in Malappuram is an ardent theatre buff.
"I was actively involved in theatre and have associated with some of the best talent in the field. Like actor Thilakan, for instance, who encouraged me to write. I was also involved in the publishing of a magazine called `Vara' and my dream then was to set up a drama troupe," he says.
Entry to tinsel town
His entry into tinsel town was by chance. "A.T. Abu and Manjalamkuzhi Ali had come to my house during the making of `Dhwani' and invited me to be part of the venture. While getting into the car with them, I never thought that it marked the beginning of my journey into a different world," says he.
Although his first script was `Ghoshayatra' for G.S. Vijayan, the next one, `Vishnulokam,' was released first.
The stories of `Kanakkinavu' and `Ghazal' are the closest to his heart, says Razack.
"I saw `Ghazal' quite recently and felt it could have been better received. Perhaps it was released at the wrong time, when the Babri Masjid issue was making headlines." `Perumazhakkalam,' was another film that was scripted by Razack. The Kamal film, which was screened in Goa and Thiruvananthapuram got a lot of rave reviews.
"Razack's stories usually revolve around a family. The issues and the characters are so life-like that viewers have no difficulty in identifying with the film. He has the ability to delve deep into the minds of the characters and he takes the audience along with him very effectively in the process," feels V.M.Vinu, who has directed Razack's latest story, `Bus Conductor,' which has Mammootty in the title role. The trio had earlier worked together for `Vesham.'
According to Razack, "the purpose of art is to initiate an interaction between different minds. It can be between individuals or the society as such. Though the settings around us get a constant facelift with the changing times, emotions, in general, do not undergo much change. The same goes for the problems that beset us."
Kamal who has directed a few scripts by Razack, including `Vishnulokam,' `Perumazhakkalam,' and `Rapakkal,' says, "His experiences and wide reading give Razack's language more strength. His stories are set in an environment that we are familiar with."
How many stories are there in Razack's story bank at a given point of time?
"There are lots of storylines in my mind and I love interacting with the characters in them. But my effort would be to find the right theme at the right moment and to mould it into a perfect shape."
For younger brother T.A. Shahid, who is also a successful script writer, Razack is more of a father figure. With a number of high-profile projects on the anvil, Razack is enjoying the fruits of his hard work. Like his films, where good is rewarded and the baddies get defeated.
