Purity of tradition

P. SURYA RAO

Mastery over `shaitya bhava' marked young Balamuralikrishna's rendition.

VOCAL PEAK Balamuralikrishna takes up the chords.

Tuneful voice, elegant style and commanding musical depth marked the concert of Master Balamuralikrishna of Chennai who sang for Sri Sadguru Sangeeta Sabha of Vijayawada at Sri Sivaramakrishna Kshetram. Master Balamurali has earned considerable reputation as a vocalist to watch in Chennai music season sabhas and he has also performed in all the important sabhas in the Country.

He began the concert with Kambhoji Ata tala varnam and followed it with Sidhivinayakam in Shanmukhapriya finishing it with fluent kalpana swaras. After rendering the Pancharatna keertana Sadhinchene in Arabhi, Balamuralikrishna took up Pantuvarali and unveiled the raga portrait magnificently preceeding the keertana Sambho Mahadeva of Thyagaraja. The neraval and swaras amply showed his musical depth. However, Rakshabettare in Bhairavi, which was taken for the main item of the concert was rendered with great aesthetic sense and sahitya bhava. The kalpana swaras in this item amply proved Master Balamurali's laya precision. B.V. Durgabhavani and M. Lakshminarayana Raju, both staff artistes of Vijayawada Akashvani lent fine support on violin and mridangam.

Bhavani's Bhairavi version and Raju's tani also stood as highlights in the concert. S. Hanumanta Rao combined well on ghatam with the mridangam player and both percussionists presented a thrilling tani. The vocalist gave a good finish to the concert with singing an Annamacharya keertana and Swathi Thirunal's famous thillana in Dhanasri.
