Festival of dance and music

Ranghbagh fest will host an interesting line up of dancers.

FOR THE LORD A temple dance in progress.

A major dance treat is in store for the culture vultures of Hyderabad. As part of the Brahmotsavam at Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple at Ranbagh, `Rangbagh Dance and Music Festival' will be held between February 5 and 11.

The event this year marks the successful completion of a decade of ritual dancing in the temple. A host of dancers will be performing at the temple premises during the festival.

Situated at Rangbagh (off the Hyderabad University Road) the Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple is estimated to be over 350 years old. The temple was part of the private property of the Pitti family till 1954 when his son, late Pannalal Pitti created a Trust to which the temple, the appurtenant land, jewellery, silver vahanas and utensils were transferred. Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple, is a living temple which has a record of continuing worship since 1861 and is estimated to be over three and half centuries old.

The eight-day annual Brahmotsavam is performed in a grand manner and on a lavish scale. Daily and special Sevas (services) are performed. Many of these are accompanied by traditional temple dances.

In the past , rituals of worship were considered incomplete without dance. Such sacred dances were customarily performed only by temple-dancers known then, as Saanis and Bhogams in the Telugu region.

They were collectively referred to as Kalavanthulu (women in the Arts). Performance of ancient ritualistic dances through Vilasini Natyam is now an established feature of the Brahmotsavam.
