COPS AND ROBBERS: Mammootty and Katrina Kaif in `Balram vs Taradas.'
There is pin drop silence at the location of `Balram vs Taradas.' Director I.V. Sasi goes through the script again and gives instructions to his crew.
As the unit gets ready for the day's shoot at an old mansion near Pukkattupadi, Kochi, a swank BMW rolls in. Excitement is palpable as Mammooty emerges from the car. He exchanges pleasantries with a few people and makes himself comfortable in a chair. After getting a feel of the next shot, he gets ready. The transformation from star to Inspector Balram is on.
Looking at his reflection in the mirror, he swirls his moustache. He is now `Inspector Balram.' In `Balram vs Taradas,' Mammootty re-enacts two of his popular characters of yesteryear - Balram, the firebrand police officer in `Aavanazhi' and Taradas, the flamboyant smuggler in `Athirathram.'
The quiet surroundings do not give a clue to the actual mood of the film. I. V. Sasi goes through the script all over again and gives instructions to the crew.
"Balram has by now become a deputy superintendent and perhaps more mature. Taradas is into arms dealing but is a romantic at heart," explains the director.
Two-in-one
There is ample scope for action and drama when the two come face to face in the film. During the construction of a medial college, a huge collection of weapons is unearthed. In the course of his investigations, Balram delves into the dubious links of Taradas. Film star Supriya, essayed by Bollywood actor Katrina Kaif, who has a soft corner for the don, is taken into custody.
Mammootty, who is on a winning spree, hopes to recreate the magic once again, this time with two characters, who the audience has already accepted. `Balram Vs Taradas' is being shot in Kochi, Thalassery, Goa and also in some foreign locales.
"Among the two, I have a soft corner for Taradas as he is more romantic," laughs Mammootty.
The next scene shows Mammootty talking to Mukesh, who is circle inspector Varma. Associate director Ratheesh Ambat explains the lines to the actors. The two actors effortlessly go through their lines and the director okays the shot in a single take.
`Balram Vs Taradas' is being produced under the banner of Liberty Royal Productions. T. Damodaran and S.N. Swami have joined hands in writing the script. Sanjeev Sankar wields the camera and Jazzie Gift is the music director. The film is getting ready for release this March.
