Fusion of music and dance

G. JAYAKUMAR

Kairali TV's `Seasons' proved to be a potpourri of cinema, music, dance and mimicry.

It was billed as a mega event staging the social, cultural and political history of Kerala. Kairali TV's `Seasons,' organised to mark the State's 50th birth anniversary, proved to be a potpourri of cinema, dance, music and mimicry.

The programme, a three-hour show, was directed by Sudhir, a programme producer with Kairali TV.

The cinema-dance-music part of the programme was an audio-visual expression of mainly three themes woven together - the history of the State, the various stages in a human life and the emotiveness of the changing seasons.

The lyrics penned by V. Madhusoodanan Nair were set to tune by music director Sarath.

M.G. Sreekumar, Nikhil, Nishad, Renjini Jose, Pratibha, Vineeth Kumar, Aravind, Chandra Lakshman, Shweta Menon were some of the artistes who took part in the show. Manganam Kuttappan's folk songs and Sreeram's fusion music were an added attraction.

The programme began with a film depicting the history and culture of Kerala.

On Malayalam

Six dancers took the stage to the music of `Theyyam thira theyyam,' eulogising the Malayalam language in the background.

As scenes of the joys of childhood were shown on the screen, songs like `Thumbi vaa thumbakudathil' were rendered on stage by the singers. Film shots of the festivals like Thrissur pooram were accompanied by singing of film songs like `Vel Muruga Haro Hara.'

On film, the scenes changed from winter to spring, then to summer and finally the rains. And on the stage, the singers and dancers evoked the moods of romance, joy, sadness and pain related to the seasons in the songs such as `Katrinile kannamma,' `Manju peyyunna rathriyil,' `Poomkattinodum kilikalodum' and so on. In the same style, the fun and frolic and friendship of the college campus was presented. The programme was interspersed with mimicry and humorous skits presented by Kottayam Nazir.

Seasons is being staged in the Gulf countries from February 4 to 24.
