Considering the number of hits he has given in recent times, Mammootty can rightly be called a `Thuruppugulan' or a trump card in Malayalam films. No wonder his latest film, directed by Johny Antony, has been named so.
"There is a certain amount of curiosity generated by the title, which, in fact, reflects the nature of the hero, Kunjumon, in the film. He is being used by those close to him," explains Johny. `Thuruppugulan' is Johny's third film after `CID Moosa' and `Kochi Rajavu.'
What is on the cards
The story is about Kunjumon, a good card player who runs a `thattukada' in Kozhikode. His father too runs a thattukada, in Kochi, in front of a five star hotel. When his father ruffles some feathers, Kunjumon comes in to resolve things, his own way. And from then on, it's action all the way.
At the day's location, inside the Cherupushpam studio near Thripunithura, the settings are those of a government office with loads of files all around. Mammootty is sporting a printed shirt, red T-shirt, and jeans. Sneha, who is back in Malayalam films after a pretty long hiatus, is the heroine.
Cinematographer Sanjeev Sankar gets on to a trolley to search for the best angle. An hour later, the director announces `break and shift.' The unit shifts to the picturesque Silver sand island, where art director Saloo K. George has set up a five star hotel with huge pillars, stylish walls, parking space and a beautiful garden.
A vintage car, from the art director's personal collection, has been parked close to the lawn. The scene has comedians Suraj Venjarammood and Prakash Payyanakkal making fun of a suit-clad gentleman, as Sneha looks bemused. Siby K.Thomas and Udayakrishnan have scripted the film. The duo along with Dileep were behind Johny's first two films.
How is it working with Mammootty?
"It's a dream come true. He is very enthused and energetic and we are in the process of transforming it on the screen in our film," he says with a smile.
`Thuruppugulan' is being produced by Milan Jaleel under the banner of Galaxy Films. The film is slated for a Vishu release.
