LIFELONG AMBITION: Ananthalekshmi Venkitaraman

On Sivarathri day, devotees pay homage to Lord Siva in different ways.

On this Sivarathri, Carnatic vocalist Ananthalekshmi Venkitaraman plans to sing before the deity at Sreekanteswaram Temple in Thiruvananthapuram from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Siva Ashtotthara kritis, a set of 108 compositions composed by Harikesanallur Muthaiah Bhagavathar, will be the main items sung.

The event is being organised by Soorya.

Sivashtothara kritis have been set in ragas like Sooryakantham, Padi, Gouri, Bhooshavali, Hamsapramari, Undakriya, Jingala, Kokiladwani, Manorama, Pushpalatha, Saindavi, and Navaroj.

As introductory pieces, the author has composed hymns invoking Ganapahti, Saraswathi, Siva, Subramanyan, Vishnu, Devi and Nandikesawara. Muthaiah Bhagavathar (1877-1945) was also a seasoned vocalist. In all, Ananthalekshmi will render 118 compositions on that day.
