Bhavana on a roll

VIJAY GEORGE

Bhavana is all set to go places with films in Malayalam and Tamil.

CELEBRATIONS: Bhavana impressed the critics and her fans with her performance in `Daivanamathil.'

As accolades and praise come her way, Bhavana is busy preparing for her Plus Two examinations. The State film award for the second best actress came her way for her sensitive portrayal of a young bride Sameera in Jayaraj's film `Daivanamathil.'

Bhavana captured the anguish of Sameera whose world falls apart when she learns that her husband has become a militant. Dwelling on her role in the film, the young and talented star says, "Though she is pretty young, Sameera is a mature girl, who comes to terms with her predicament and puts on a brave face. After my debut as the deglamourised Parimalam in `Nammal,' I was almost being typecast as the nice girl next door in most of the films that followed.

A pleasant surprise

"This role came as a pleasant surprise. I had never done a Muslim character before and Sameera was an unusually bold girl, given the background that she came from. I regard this award as a great encouragement."

Is the real Bhavana, who is generally perceived as a "bubbly chatterbox," as mature as the reel-life Sameera?

"Though I haven't gone through a similar crisis off screen, I don't regard myself as dumb either. My friends think I can take sensible decisions during a crisis."

With eight releases and many more in the pipeline, she has virtually lived out of suitcases for the whole of last year.

Is she happy with the way her career is shaping up?

"Absolutely. I have never insisted on solo heroine projects. For instance, I had a guest role in `Udayananu Tharam.' I was there for just one song in `Runway' and my character comes in towards the interval in the recent `Bus Conductor.' I feel that it is the strength of a role that matters and that is my criteria while selecting a film. Like, the brief appearance in `Chanthupottu' and `Naran,' in which I have significant roles, came out during the same time and it did help me a lot," she avers.

Bhavana adds that she has no problems playing the heroine opposite senior stars.

"I have grown up admiring their films. It happens elsewhere, so why should we make such an issue about it here?"

`Chithiram Pesuthadi,' directed by Mysskin, marked her debut in Tamil cinema. She is Charu in the film, who tries to reform Thiru, a henchman to a local don. "Almost everyone associated with the film were newcomers and the energy level on the sets was really high," she reminisces.

She is now acting in `Arya' with Madhavan and Prakash Raj and in `Veyyil' with Bharath, which is director Shankar's home production. She has nixed some projects in Tamil "as the roles demanded some skin show, which would have affected my image here."

In Malayalam, `Parayam,' has finally been released. Her forthcoming releases include `Chintamani Kolacase' with Suresh Gopi and `Chess' in which she is paired with Dileep.

Discussing her plans she says, "I have already lost a year and this time, I'm gearing up for the examination. She plans to do her graduation in English literature.
