Handling a sensitive issue
Babu Janardhanan is the scenarist of `Achanurangatha Veedu.'
It is never easy to tackle subjects that have been dissected in the media and on various forums. The issues involved are often too sensitive or gruesome to portray on celluloid.
However, Babu Janardhanan has attempted to centre his story on the various sex scandals that rocked Kerala. Instead of a salacious account, Babu has attempted to sensitively narrate the story from the victim's point of view.
His `Achanurangatha Veedu,' directed by Lal Jose, captures the anguish of the victim's family and the intrusive media attention that makes life miserable for the victim and her family.
The film, with Salim Kumar as the protagonist, deals with an ageing government servant's angst when his youngest daughter fails to return from school one evening.
"The story came to mind after I watched the pandemonium that ensued after the girl involved in the Suryanelli case was brought to the court. I was stunned by the venomous reaction of the people. Most of them did not spare a thought to the girl or her parents," says Babu. Babu is quick to add that `Achanurangatha Veedu' is not just based on a single incident, but is a cinematic adaptation of similar incidents.
Babu Janardhanan films include `Sudinam,' `Varnappakittu,' `Anubhoothi,' `Thachiledathu Chundan,' `Chathurangam' and `Chandranudikkunna Dikkil.'
