Once again it's the season to celebrate chikan: in cool muslins, mulls, organdies and cotton, georgettes, crepes and chiffons. In soft `sherbati' shades vibrant sun-defying oranges, blues and yellows, and in the six traditional shades of white! Lucknow's chikan embroidery has had a tremendous revival in the past few decades.
At Evoluzione (Khader Nawaz Khan Road, Off Nungambakkam High Road) the haute couture celebration of the craft can be seen in the prêt lines of Muzzaffar Ali, Rohit Bal, Tarun Tahaliani and Rajesh Pratap Singh. Meera and Muzaffar Ali's `Avadh' creations use the most exquisite of traditional motifs to create a line of smart tops, shirts and kurtas.
Contemporary designers like Pratap have used chikankari for non-traditional motifs. Shilpi's `Elegant Lucknowi' collection has gossamer thin saris woven at Phulia in West Bengal.
The chikan saris also feature georgettes and crepes in bold Indian colours such as deep pinks, yellows and blacks. Shilpi's `Elegant Lucknowi' collection also has stitched tops in black featuring dramatic white chikankari work. Also white on white kurtis and tops and chikan kurtas.
Shilpi is situated at 29, C.P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet, and GeeGee Minar College Road, Chennai.
