An eclectic concert tomorrow

Lakshmi Krishnadas Pai, a Hindustani vocalist, will be performing at the Karnataka State Cricket Association premises tomorrow at 7 p.m. Although Lakshmi comes from a family of Carnatic musicians, she developed a passion to sing Hindustani classical from an early age when she attended sangeet sammelans and concerts in Delhi. She studied Hindi in school and participated in Hindi and Urdu plays, in All India Radio and on stage.

After marriage she moved to USA. She sang in several programmes in Los Angeles area. When she returned to India in 1997, Lakshmi had a single-point agenda - to become a Hindustani classical singer.

She commenced her music lessons as a student of Pandit Parameshwar Hegde.

After about two years, she gave solo concerts in the city. Since then, she has presented solo concerts and participated in music festivals in and outside Bangalore.

Apart from recording for Udaya TV in April 2002, she has written lyrics, composed music and sang in the play Gautam Buddha, directed by Shringar Nagaraj.

After having learnt in the Kirana style from Pandit Parameshwar Hegde for four and half years, Lakshmi is now being trained in the Gwalior gharana style of singing by Mukund Gore.

Tomorrow's concert would be a mix of Hindustani classical and ghazals.
