Consecration

The Mahakumbabhishekam of the Sri Jaganayagi Ambigai Samedha Sri Jagadeeswara Swami temple in Ogaiperaiyur, also known as Tiruperaiyur, near Needamangalam in Tiruvarur, will be performed on March 17.

The rituals have already started with Mahaganapathy homam, Navagraha homam and Sri Lakshmi homam. The fourth kala yagasala puja will be performed at 6.30 a.m. on March 17 and culminate in the Mahakumbabhishekam.

The consecration of the vimanam and the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Jagadeeswarar and Sri Jaganayagi Amman will be performed between 9.55 a.m. and 10 a.m., today.

According to tradition, when Tiruvarur was the capital of the Cholas, it was surrounded by a fort. The village that sprang up near the fort was called Peraiyilur. Over a period of time the name got distorted to Peraiyur, say experts.

The temple is a `padal petra sthalam' as it has been sung by one of the Nayanmars of Saivite lore, Appar (Tirunavakkarasar). It is also mentioned in the Tiruvarutpa of Vallalar Ramalinga Swamigal by its old name of Peraiyil.

Songs of a poetess called Peraiyil Muruvalar are part of the Tamil anthologies, `Kurunthogai' and `Purananuru.'

Temple gopuram

The temple boasts of a three-tier gopuram that faces east. Other deities that can be found in the temple are — Karpaga Vinayagar, Murugar, Mahalakshmi and Bhairavar. The shrine for Surya Chandirar is a speciality here. Pancha Murthies and the Nataraja Sabha can be found in the mandapam.

The sthala vriksham is Narthai and the teertham is called Agni teertham. The temple was last renovated in 1938 and a kumbabhishekam performed.
