Glitz, glam, Kamal

S. R. ASHOK KUMAR

Shot extensively in the U.S., Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu, with Kamal and Jyotika leading the cast, will be a highlight of Tamil new year.

HAPPY HUNTING: Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu

Kamal Haasan and Jyotika were engaged in casual conversation pushing a trolley, director Gautam Menon watching. It was a patch up for work already done in the U.S., explained the director. The ``Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu" crew had a whale of a time in America, according to Menon. ``We shot at some important locations, the fire department office, for instance," Menon elaborated. ``The film, slated for April 14, has grandeur and glitz backed by a good story. A high ranking police officer goes after a criminal, the hunt taking him all the way to the U. S.

"It was a delight to work with Kamal Haasan who was so co-operative. Producer Seventh Channel Manickam Narayanan was generous, providing us with whatever we wanted," he said.

Cinematographer Ravivarman chimed in saying that he had tried some breathtaking angles, quite risky though. "We shot with a helicopter which had worked for some of the best films in Hollywood. Both Gautam and I were dangling, tied to the belly of the craft with a rope. Another first, of course, is the Rollvision camera, used for the first time in a Tamil film. Another first is the Super 35 mm on the Tamil screen."

A modest Kamal Haasan said he expected the film to do well at the box office. "We all have worked hard and it is now for the Tamil speaking viewers to make it a success. I enjoyed the stint and Manickam Narayanan has really done a good job."

"I consider myself lucky to have produced a film in which Kamal has acted, directed by Gautham Menon. The value gets enhanced with the involvement of Harris Jeyaraj (music) and Ravivarman," Narayanan said.
