Jalatarangini jazzes up nite

Can you imagine a musical evening with cups?

Rendering of recitals of Carnatic music by striking the edges of porcelain cups of graded sizes (21 to cover 3 or 15 to cover 2 octaves from the Mandra to the Taara Panchamam) with sticks, summum bonum to be called as Jalatarangini though is of a rare occurrence, is not an entirely unknown phenomenon in the South.
Sri Vijaya Tyagaraja Sangeetha Sabhaorganised a Jalatarangini recital by Anayampatti S. Ganesh of Chennai, a name to reckon with among the very few exponents of Carnatic music on it at present. It was held last Wednesday in Kalabharathi.
Though it was delayed , lovers of music, especially those who had not even heard of the name of such an eventwaited patiently. At last, at 7.30 p.m. Ganesh started tuning the cups and got off to a start half-an-hour later playing Vaataapi (Hamsadhvani) adorned with aalapana and swaram in the two speeds.
Then he played the Sriraga Pancharatna kriti of Tyagaraja Endaromahanubhavulu evocatively and followed it with a brief but beautiful elaboration of Sudhamayi (Amritavarshini).
Then figured a scintillating version of Sarasa Saama Daana (Kapi Narayana), Nagumomuganaleni embellished with ragam and swaram and expansive exposition of Bhavanutha (Mohana). G. Sinu on the violin and Tanjore Subrahmanyam on mridangam (both from Chennai) and local artiste Y. P. S. Madhu Babu on ghatam lent excellent support. Subrahmanyam and Madhu Babu as well rendered a knowledgeable Tani. Ganesh concluded the recital with a Magudi (folk item).
