Celebrating with tarangam

Thousands converged at Tirupoonthuruthi to pay homage to Narayana Tirtha.

Born in Kaza near Guntur in Andhra Pradesh and drawn to Tamil Nadu, Sri Narayana Tirtha took Jeeva Samadhi at Tirupoonthuruthi near Thanjavur on Masi Sukla Ashtami Day, star Krithika.

Sri Narayana Tirtha Aradhana Committee celebrated the 260th aradhana of the saint, who composed `Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini,' at his Brindavanam in Tirupoonthuruthi from March 5-7.

Thousands of the saint's devotees converged at the village to pay homage to Narayana Tirtha.

The celebrations began with `Biksha Vandanam,' a ritual observed to obtain the grace of a guru or ascetic. This was followed by Veda Parayanam and recitation of a `Tirumurai' and `Vishnu Sahasranamam' by the members of All India Vishnu Sahasranama Cultural Federation.

A. Ramji, former General Manager of Indian Railways and patron of the Trust, welcomed the gathering and T. S. Krishnamurti, former Chief Election Commissioner, presided. V. Vaidyanathan, industrialist from Chennai inaugurated the festival.

Felicitated

The Aradhana Committee felicitated violin maestro M. Chandrasekharan and honoured its former office-bearers. All India Radio broadcast live the concerts of D. Pasupathy and Suganda Kalamegam on March 5 on the National Programme of Music.

The highlight of Pasupati's recital, enhanced by the accompaniment of Chandrsekaran on the violin, was a brilliant exposition of ``Jaya Jaya Srinivas" in Kalyani. Suganda Kalamegam etched the beautiful contours of Todi singing the popular ``Mamaha Aparada Satam."

Though almost all artistes displayed great devotion to tarangam music in their homage concerts during the three-day festival, some recitals stood out for their quality and bhakti bhava.

For instance, T. M. Krishna, Akandy Raja Rao, Malladi Brothers, Mythili Kannan, Mambalam Sisters and Sikkil Gurucharan.

A Japanese student, Jinovi, doing research work at the Carnatic Music College, Tiruvaiyaru, also presented tarangams. Udayalur Kalyanarama Bhagavathar's divya namasankeertanam and Radha Kalyanam won the audience appreciation.

Roja Kannan presented a ballet, `Sri Krishna Leela Tarangam' that was attractively choreographed for the occasion.

Kanthimathi Santhanam's `Rukmini Kalyanam,' crafted in pracheena sampradaya, provided a fitting finale.
