Music Programmes

Fareed Ahmed Khan of the Kirana gharana and Aruna Jaiswal presented this past week, "Sham-e-Ghazal", an evening of ghazals at the India Habitat Centre. Another interesting event was the Canticle Choir, which presented music of the season of Lent and Easter earlier this week.

The India International Centre hosted a number of music programmes recently. These included a Hindustani classical vocal recital by Dilip Kumar Maity from Purba Medinipur, a disciple of Usharanjan Mukhiopadhyay of the Indore gharana. There was also a sitar recital by Partha Pratim Roy from Kolkata. He is a disciple of Devi Prasad Chatterjee, Nihar Bandhu Chowdhury and Ajoy Sinha Roy.

Dance Performance

Students of Guru Padma Sampath Kumaran who runs the Nrityam Dance and Cultural Society performed at the Delhi Tamil Sangam in R.K Puram this past weekend. Among the highlights of the evening was an experimental fusion of Bharatanatyam and Pang-alay, a folk dance of the Philippines. The group also presented a dance interpretation of the poem "Annaei" by President APJ Abdul Kalam, choreographed by Guru Padma. Other works of literature chosen by her for dance choreography included the Kamba Ramayanam. The dancers were Deepa Shivanand, Angela Lawenko, Bea Puno, Sunita Seetharam and B. Sambhavi.

Art Exhibitions

The art exhibitions that concluded recently included Reverse Paintings on polyester sheets by K.G.Subramanyan at the Triveni; an exhibition of paintings, The Magnificent One, by Amita Abbi Prashant at the Open Palm Court Area.

Art Gallery

A new art gallery was inaugurated at Space - School of Performing Arts and Creative Education - on Mathura Road. It was inaugurated by New York based art critic Tracey Hummers. The gallery aims to provide a platform to upcoming artists.
