An evening of music and dance

P. SURYA RAO

Students of the Government College of Music and Dance put together an entertaining performance.

K. Sowmya, the talented daughter of reputed Kuchipudi guru Nayacharya Bhagavathula Venkatarama Sarma, gave a fine Kuchipudi recital at a function organised by Sri Gokaraju Laila Gangaraju Kala Vedika at the Government College of Music and Dance, Vijayawada.

The function was arranged to distribute cash awards to students from different disciplines who scored maximum marks in last year's public examinations held in music and dance.

Before the prize distribution, the audiences were treated to a brief and enjoyable veena duet by the students of diploma veena class.

The duo played Vatapi in Hamsadhvani, Anuragamuleni in Saraswathi, the Pancharatna keertana Endaro in Sriragam and a thillana in Pharaz.

They were accompanied by K. Saigiridhar on mridangam.

This was followed by an enthralling Kuchipudi dance performance by K. Sowmya who received her training from her father Venkatarama Sarma, who rendered the nattuvangam. Sowmya started her performance with a Suprabhatham slokam as a ragamalika and followed with a heavy item Jagadanandakaraka, the first pancharatna keertana of Thyagaraja in Nata.

Sowmya's precise nritta and effective abhinayam were charming.

The Kulukaka Nadavaro, an Annamayya keertana in Athana, was impressive.

She performed with admirable involvement keeping with the lyrics of this sringara keertana.

Other highlights in Sowmya's performances were the Javali in Kanada and a brisk thillana.

Fine support from the wigs came from D.V. Kanakadurga (vocal), P. Nageswara Rao (Violin) and M. Vijayakumar (mridangam).

Govindarajan, principal in-charge of the music collegem, introduced the artistes and proposed the vote of thanks.
