History reinterpreted
GOOD SHOW Tughlaq was a power-packed performance
Tughlaq one of the most popular plays of the playwright and actor Girish Karnad was staged at Bhoomigeetha, Rangayana, Mysore. Directed by Chidambara Rao Jambe, the play reinterprets the life and times of the Mughal king Mohammed Bin Tughlaq, known for his eccentricity. In fact, he is most remembered for shifting the capital from Delhi to Doulatabad.
Basic stagecraft and costumes designed by the team of artistes at Rangayana did a good job. Artistes performed their role impressively. However, the powerful dialogues, expressive performance by Jagadish Manavarthe as Tughlaq and the crisp editing were the hallmarks of the play.
Homage to Vasudevacharya
Coming from the Rudrapatnam tradition, Dr. R. N. Srilatha paid rich tributes to Mysore Vasudevacharya by rendering the pallavi composed by her on the renowned Vaggeyakara of Mysore.
This composition in raga Shankarabharana (tishra triputa tala) was a befitting gesture because it was a performance at the Sangeetha Kalanidhi Vasudevacharya Bhavana under the aegis of Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha Sabha.
The other rare raga selected was Karnaranjani (vakra shadava sampoorna raga derived from Karaharapriya melakarta). Though blessed with profound knowledge of music, the artiste could not reach the sublime rasanubhava of impeccable resonance in both the lower and higher octaves. P. G. Lakshminarayana on mridanga was at his best. Dasappa's support on the morsing was good.
