DYNAMIC: Nag ravi

His latest endeavour is the inauguration of his SR channel, which Kamal Haasan launched recently. Ravi's English-Tamil transcription helps Kamal now, to write his scripts. And the music of Yuvan Shankar Raja can be brought to the recording room in Chennai, wherever the composer may be. Ravi grew up in Chennai and finished his MBA abroad. He is currently pursuing his DBA (Doctorate in Business Administration). Ravi has a number of firsts to his credit. In SMS, he enabled English letters to be read in Tamil. Meena's game show on Jaya TV has his brain behind it. In an interview Nag Ravi talked about technology and how it would help film industry. Excerpts.

What is it that technology can do to improve films?

Well, technology is constantly changing cinema's image. For example, we can offer movie on demand. The customer can receive the movie or comedy or songs directly to their set box and view them, as and when they like.

Can you explain movie or music on demand?

Thanks to the steps taken by the State Government piracy has come down, which means movies can now be watched only in a cinema hall. But our movie on demand gives the customer the facility to pay a royalty and download the film anytime. Another new development is that tickets can now be booked through SMS. It has worked very well with the Abirami cinema complex.

What have you to offer the producer?

DCM and CRM. With Digital Content Management, we digitise the entire footage and send it to our server. Editing, music composing, graphics, dubbing, etc., can go on simultaneously. This saves a lot of time and money for the producer.

CRM is Content Rights Management. With just one copy the producer gives, we can make several digital prints and using our satellite and wimax technology, send them to any number of theatres, provided they have compatible technology.

What, do you think, is the future of digital cinema?

The awareness about digital cinema is just catching up and there is great potential. We have solutions for the next generation technology HD-High Definition standards using 4:4:4 digital mode.

Reports have it that 75 per cent of the theatres in the Indian metros will be adopting digital projection in 2008.

What is it that your SR Plus set top box can offer besides technology?

We can offer, store and play options so that the customer can save movies or music and enjoy them at their convenience at home or office.

Academically, how are you qualified to handle soft solutions?

Well I am an MBA graduate and pursuing my doctorate in international business administration and I have been in the satellite industry for the past 11 years. Most of the satellite technology is used for the media, whose content is dominated by cinema. So we have started developing solutions for cinema.
