Thyagaraja jayanthi celebrations

The 241st birth anniversary of Thyagaraja was celebrated in a fitting manner.

VERITABLE FARE V.Lalitha Chandrasekhar's `Sangeetha Sodaaharana Prasangam' recital.

Commemorating the 241st birth anniversary of Thyagaraja on May 3, coinciding with Vaisakha Suddha Sashti, Thyagaraja Aaradhana Trust organised Sangeetha Sodaaharana Prasangam by V. Lalitha Chandrasekhar in Kalabharathi last week.

Though a novice in undertaking such exercises, Lalitha did well in narrating the life history of the legendary vaaggeyakaara in detail, interspersing it with the rendering of select compositions out of the five kritis on Tripurasundari at Tiruvayur, the Kovur and Srirangam pancharatna kritis besides the kritis composed at Tapasteertham (Lalgudi) and other places like Tirupathi and so on. She also made an effort explaining how Thyagaraja derived and expounded ragabhava composing kritis and keerthans not only in all the 72 melakartha scales but also hundreds of Apuroopa scales besides structuring more than a hundred scales himself.

Lalitha was accompanied by violinist K.V.S. Prasad and mridangist G. Venkata Rao, who lent excellent support.

Devotional music

The week also witnessed a recital of devotional music by AIR artiste P. Sita from Mumbai in the Shirdi Sai Baba temple complex in Sitammadhara. It was organised by Shirdi Sai Baba Spiritual Centre.

Range and melody coupled with evocative expression marked her rendering which comprised Jayadev Ashtapadis, a couple of them from feature films, and select compositions of Kabir, Surdas, Meera and Tulsidas. A.S. John on keyboard and flute, well supported on another keyboard by Manohar Prasad, violin by Vijayasri, guitar by Md. Parveej and scintillating tabla by D. Dhanunjay, put up a good show. P.V.K.S. Nalinikanth and M.G. Sankaran compered the programme. A.R.S.
