APPEALING EXHIBIT Rabindra Maharana's `Two youths... '
A group of young artists named Evolution from Khallikote of South Orissa had an exhibition of their paintings at the Jayadev Bhavan in Bhubaneswar from May 5 to May 9. Several art works revealed that the budding artists are capable of flowering in art.
It may be noted that the first government run art college in Orissa had been at the semi-urban Khallikote; and hence systematic training in fine arts is being imparted here. The members of the Evolution group, by and large, are well versed with the craft aspect of painting; but the creative aspect, which is much more important, need to be reviewed.
Some 40 paintings were exhibited comprising of watercolour, acrylic and oil painting works. Thematically also, the paintings were broadly of three categories: human beings, nature studies and social realities. Paintings portraying simple people in everyday realities or simple people on special occasions like the village religious fair, appeared most appealing among the exhibits. For example, Rabindra Maharana's two paintings in a rural setting, `Two youths playing Kandava and Khanjani' (folk musical instruments) and `Cowherd boy with cow and calf,' appeal by their simplicity.
Ashok Kumar Das' `Visitors to a religious festival' is equally appealing the delight reflecting in the faces of the village folk reveals elemental joy.
There were also a number of nature studies among the exhibits. There was variety in the paintings portraying nature some depicted landscapes comprising mountains, rivers and vegetation while some mirrored a single tree. But colour combination in the nature studies of Rajasree Kanungo, Pallavi Snigdha, Ashok Das and Ravindra Maharana were delightful.
In workmanship, at least two paintings by Satya Ranjan Bishoyi stood out. One was self-portrait and the other was `Valuation of Fashion Show.' The latter is a large acrylic painting containing three nudes with creepers encompassing their bodies. This is a satirical view in which fashion shows are ridiculed since less clothes on female models escalates their position. This painting in its workmanship stood out, independent of the satirical view. We hope that Evolution will hold many such exhibitions from time to time.
