Delightful Kuchipudi fare

Kalabharati students came up with excellent Kuchipudi performances.



VIBRANT AFFAIR Dance and drama recitals marked the cultural fare.

Young pupils of Visakha Music and Dance Academy's Kalabharati Dance School, performed classical dances in the Kuchipudi format in Kalabharati last Tuesday.

Besides the invocatory number Vinayaka, seniors Choodamani, Sasikala, Bindu, Ankitha, Indraja, Aishwarya and Sowmya also presented Natiyinchuneepadamu and the Thyagaraja pancharatna kriti, Endaromahanubhavulu. Juniors Sraddha, Srilakshmi, Sravya, S. Alekhya and Y. Alekhya danced to a composition of Annamayya and the Brindavani Thillana of Balamurali. Sub-juniors Manjusha, Manisha, Vinisha, Sasikiran, Priyanka, Pranathiraj, Navya, Mounica, Kundana, Sameera, Mitravinda, Harshini, Sharmila, Divya, Priyanka and Gayatri presented the Bilhari Swarajathi, a tarangam and candle dance. The two other numbers, Brahmanjali and Devistuti, were presented by the juniors along with a couple of seniors and most of the sub-juniors.

Presentation of picturesque postures by the dancers and depiction of the episodes sculpted in temple walls, especially of Orissa, marked the choreography of almost all the numbers that were presented.

Besides choreographing the show, dance teacher Guru G. Ramakrishna directed and wielded the cymbals as well while AIR artiste Dwaram V.K.G. Thyagaraju lent excellent vocal support in the company of G. Venkatarao on mridangam, M. Neeladri Rao on violin and T. Atchutha Rao on flute. Surya Rao and party provided good make-up.


Stage show

The VMDA also featured a play titled Srikanthamayya, scripted by Viriyala Lakshmipathi and directed by Ayyalasomayajula Gopalakrishna along with K. Venkateswara Rao for Vedabharathi, the very next day. It was an effort to popularise the name and literary contribution of Srikantha Krishnamacharyulu, who like Annamayya, was apparently a great devotee and sang about four lakh Padasankeertans in praise of Lord Simhagiri Varahanarasimha Swamy before he attained liberation. But devoid of even a single such sankeertan, the play left an impression of being a neatly and colourfully unfolded pack of well-knit but fictitious episodes, dialogues in the poetic idiom and a few lyrics. Even the excellent histrionic talent of actors K.V. Rao, Gopalakrishna, D.J. Rao, K. Appa Rao, M.S.R. Naidu, M.P. Rama Rao, I.S.N. Murthy, B.V.S. Patro, Durgaprasad, Sivajyoti, B.V. Sai, M. Subrahmanyam, Sandhya, B.A. Naidu, Sivaramakrishna, Vamadev and Seshagiri Rao, could sustain audience interest only in patches.
