AURAL FEAST: Sanjay Subramaniam.
MDR Day is observed to pay homage to M.D. Ramanathan on his birth anniversary. The programmes organised in connection with MDR Day this year included a concert by Sanjay Subramaniam.
The concert saw Sanjay Subramaniam rendering a rare composition by MDR. `Vighnaraja' in Sriranjini was noteworthy for its melody and swaras. A briga-laden elaboration of Sahana covered every nuance of the raga with emphasis on the `vakra' phrases. Sanjay's kriti renditions were slow exercises. He often went for his own variations of the sangatis, which is quite characteristic of his style. The composition in chaste Tamil and Sanskrit were a treat to the rasikas.
Reviving memories
A short essay by Huseni with modulated expressions heightened the raga bhava. The vocalist used tonal variations and seemed to revive the magic tenor of MDR. `Enna kutram seydeno' was the kriti chosen. Senior violinist Nagai Murali chose a sober treatment to the Sankarabharanam alaapana and portrayed a vivid aural picture with just the essential snatches of musical phrases. To enliven the audience, he sang a fast number `Subramanyam bhajare' in Hindolam.
Tanjore Ramadas on the mridangam and Thripunithura Radhakrishnan on the ghatom provided excellent accompaniment. `Sagara shayana vibho' had a different and heavy treatment of a delicate raga Bhageshri.
The feast of classy compositions stamped with the composer's signature (mudra) `Varadadasa' got that final Midas touch with an exquisite tillana in Sindhubhairavi.
